Description

Automatic translation from Danish.

Rare Vunikau / Waka, two-handed heavy war club from the second half of the 19th century. Total L. 113 cm.
Made from a single piece of wood with a straight shaft ending in a fluted ball which forms the head. The shaft has engraved decoration at the lower end, which also serves as a grip for the hands. The wood with age-related, shiny patina and stress cracks on the shaft.

Horns from a Danish private collector; Many Fijian Vunikau clubs found their way to England during the 19th century as exotic souvenirs from encounters with the native islanders, both acquired through violent clashes and through trade. Due to their origin and rarity, these items have become highly sought after by collectors.
