Submitted to me was a “fantasy” box in the shape of a CARP head, made of smoky quartz (cairngorm). Gold hinge fittings, silver (in the casts), transparent red enamel over guilloche background. Fifty-two diamonds. Twelve garnet cabochons. Eyes: rose-cut diamonds. Diameter: 9 cm.

Hallmarks. ФАБЕРЖЕ [FABERGE] hallmark; maker’s mark, М. П [M. P] in oval with the dot in the centre (Mikhail Perkhin); hallmark of the St. Petersburg Assay Board for 1985-1989 [sic!] displaying zolotnik fineness of 56, which equals metric fineness of 583, and coat of arms of Saint Petersburg (an anchor).

Expert examinations in the areas of art history and stylistics, archival and historical evidence, technological practices of jewellery-making, assay, commodity science and organoleptic properties allow attributing the object under review to the range of objects made by the company of Carl Fabergé, purveyor to the Supreme [Imperial] Court, at the main St. Petersburg workshop under supervision of Mikhail Yevlampievich Perkhin [Михаил Евлампьевич Перхин] (1960 [sic!]-1903). M. E. Perkhin started working for Fabergé in 1876, became the head of the workshop in 1888, executed the most important commissions, including [end of column] Easter eggs for the Emperor and “fantasy” articles. The latter also include the box under review. The distinguishing features of the object are fine finish of the smoky quartz, choice of rare and valuable raw material and excellent carp model. Elegant boxes of this kind can be found in the Fabergé range; they were made for high-ranking customers, and their value was substantial.

SUMMARY. I attribute the “fantasy” box in the shape of a CARP head, submitted to me for review – featuring gold fittings on the hinges, decorated with rose-cut diamonds, diamonds, garnet cabochons, and transparent red enamel over a guilloche background—to be a genuine article made by the Master Goldsmith M. E. Perkhin. The object was made on commission, to design, and from materials of the company of the purveyor to the Supreme [Imperial] Court, Carl Fabergé, in St. Petersburg, in 1904-1908. Due to its superior artistic properties and well-preserved state, this high quality jewellery item is an object worthy of collection and has substantial antique value.
